It's a 1943 Canadian 50-cent piece, with all the dead space cut out, leaving only the text and coat of arms on the reverse side.
It's a fine piece of Canadiana which I found, of all things, in a special shop in Paraty, that little tourist town in Brazil detailed below.
The guy who ran the place was, I think, from Uruguay, as if it wasn't complicated enough.
I wear it around my neck. Love it to pieces.
